On behalf of: Medical Student Section
Committee: D (Public Health)
Resolved Section(s):
RESOLVED: That our MSMS support rigorous research into the risks and benefits of public water fluoridation, particularly the use of silicofluorides; and be it further RESOLVED: That our MSMS urge the Michigan Department of Community Health to conduct further research regarding the risks and benefits of fluoridation of Michigan public water supplies, with particular emphasis on vulnerable populations. RATIONALE: The Committee heard testimony from several speakers for and against this issue. The Committee debated the merits of resolves and felt that MSMS does not have the resources to conduct its own study. The Department of Community Health is continuing their work with limited resources to study the effects of fluoridation levels on children in the third grade, and there have been several studies published that support the effects of fluoride in drinking water as being positive, and MSMS and the AMA have policy that support fluoride, its uses, and the continued research of fluoride. Therefore, the Committee felt that this resolution falls within existing policy. The Committee wants to commend the Medical Student Section for bringing this issue forward and for their hard work and time spent on this issue.
