The Michigan State Medical Society (MSMS) is the unified voice of Michigan physicians in the legislative and regulatory arenas. Our advocacy efforts focus on ensuring that physicians—not bureaucrats, insurance companies, or politicians—remain at the center of patient care decisions.
MSMS works year-round with lawmakers, regulatory agencies, and other interested parties to advance policies that promote physician-led, patient-centered health care.
2025–2026 Legislative Agenda
Ensuring Access to Physician-Led Care
- Expand and support the physician workforce throughout the learning and practice continuum
- Protect and promote physician-led, team-based health care
- Support patients’ right-to-know through health professional credential disclosure
- Enhance resources for physician health and well-being
Improving Michigan’s Health Care Environment
- Support programs and policies to make Michigan a desirable place to practice medicine
- Maintain the legislative intent and enforceability of medical liability laws to ensure a fair, balanced environment
- Oppose regulations, policies, and contractual requirements that interfere with patient care
- Reject proposed legislative and regulatory mandates that add unnecessary administrative burden
Advancing Public Health and Health Equity
- Expand access to care for patients with Medicaid and the Healthy Michigan Plan, including increased reimbursement rates
- Promote inclusive, equitable health care so every Michigander can access essential medical services and achieve improved outcomes
- Expand access to mental health and substance use disorder treatment
