Author(s): Brian Silver, MD

Sponsor: Brian Silver, MD

On behalf of: Wayne County Delegation

Committee: B (Legislation)

Resolved Section(s):
RESOLVED: That MSMS seek policies that would exempt physicians providing pro bono health care to uninsured patients at their practice sites from legal action, including medico-legal and criminal charges stemming from the care of pro bono-treated patients; and be it furtherRESOLVED: That MSMS seek policies to allow physicians to provide pro bono health care to uninsured patients at their practice sites without a subsequent denial of payment for treatment of insured patients.RATIONALE: The Committee believed that this resolution raises important questions about some of the barriers physicians face related to providing care to patients without insurance. The Committee made a minor change to the wording of the resolution to focus on completion of this task as opposed to simply obtaining model legislation from the AMA. Overall the Committee was very supportive of this concept.
