Physicians Review Organization (PRO)

Providing effective external peer review is an essential element in the overall success of any healthcare facility. Recognizing that hospital and medical staffs have the responsibility to maintain high-quality standards, Physicians Review Organization (PRO) has developed a peer review policy and approach to meet those standards.

PRO is a URAC accredited external review organization, founded in 1983 by the Michigan State Medical Society (MSMS). Since that time, PRO has separated from MSMS to become an independent organization that still enjoys the support of the medical society but maintains its separate, independent status. Utilizing the expertise of its experienced staff and carefully selected board-certified reviewers, PRO ensures that clients receive informed, confidential, and objective reviews.

With the increasing scrutiny of medical errors, physician peer review continues to be essential in the evaluation of patient care and safety. Physician participation in the evaluation process through PRO ensures that only competent physicians can review medical decisions of their peers. MSMS encourages physicians to participate with peer review in their hospitals and for independent review organizations such as PRO.

"If we physicians do not perform peer reviews, someone else will", said PRO chair Willard S. Stawski, MD. "It is our professional responsibility to step up and participate."
