The Michigan State Medical Society (MSMS) is supporting newly introduced legislation in the Michigan House of Representatives that would promote greater transparency around healthcare professionals’ titles and credentials, helping patients clearly understand the qualifications and training of the clinicians providing their care.
State Representative John Roth (R-Interlochen) introduced House Bill 6326 following a year of collaboration with MSMS to develop legislation focused on title transparency and patient safety. HB 6326 seeks to address confusion about professional titles in healthcare settings and help patients make informed decisions about their medical care. The bill would require clinicians to use accurate titles that reflect their education and licensing when interacting with patients.
Michigan State Medical Society President Phillip Wise, MD, said, “patients should never be left uncertain about the qualifications of the person providing their care. Clear identification of a provider’s education, training and credentials can help strengthen professional standards, build trust and promote patient safety.”
The legislation would require healthcare professionals to use titles that accurately reflect their education and licensing and would establish clear disclosures regarding provider training and qualifications. It also would provide for standardized disclosures in healthcare settings and enforcement through existing licensing boards.
HB 6326 has been referred to the House Health Policy Committee, with committee hearings to hopefully follow. MSMS will continue to monitor the legislation and keep members informed as it moves through the legislative process.
