Thomas Simmer, MD, to Retire; MSMS Past President James Grant, MD, Named SVP and CMO at BCBSM

Doctor Simmer joined Blue Cross in 1999, and is currently responsible for reimbursement, medical policy and professional payment policies. He was the architect of the successful launch of the Physician Group Incentive Program (PGIP) which include their patient centered medical home and collaborative quality initiatives. He has received numerous awards for his work promoting health care transformation in Michigan through collaborative programs with doctors and hospitals throughout the state.

In 2019, then president, Betty S. Chu, MD, presented Doctor Simmer with the highest honor within MSMS, a Presidential Citation in recognition of distinguished service on behalf of the medical profession.

MSMS Past President, James Grant, MD, has been named his replacement. According to the BCBSM announcement, Doctor Grant and Doctor Simmer will work together to transition responsibilities when Doctor Grant begins his new role in September.  Doctor Grant will work closely with the Health Care Value division to maintain focus on enhancing quality and value in health care.

"MSMS appreciates Doctor Simmer’s innovation, brilliance, and compassion in creating a new transformative delivery model in Michigan," said Julie Novak, MSMS Chief Executive Officer. "His legacy will be his work with PGIP, but he will be remembered by his colleagues for his accessibility, willingness to engage in thoughtful discussions, and difficult conversations, while being a true partner in caring for patients. We also congratulate Doctor Grant in his new position and look forward to continue working with him in his new role."
