More than nine million Americans have undiagnosed Type 2 diabetes or prediabetes. In this course, attendees will learn about important updates, and the use of tools and resources for patients with prediabetes and Type 2 diabetes management. The newest updates to the recommendations and guidelines around lab tests for chronic kidney disease, and how it impacts patients with diabetes and hypertension will be discussed. This course will also cover the mental and emotional aspects of diabetes including diabetes distress, and how mental health affects diabetes control and long-term outcomes. Hear about the latest work being done with Continuous Glucose Monitor (CGM) devices in patients with Type 2 diabetes, and how to effectively use these devices and their data in your practice.

Objectives:

  • Explain continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) technology, and when and how to apply and wear CGMs.
  • Discuss the link between carbohydrate intake and CGM results.
  • Explain what diabetes distress is and how to recognize it in your patients.
  • Discuss how the mental and emotional aspects of managing diabetes effect control and compliance.
  • Define chronic kidney disease and understand how to classify patients by Glomerular Filtration Rate (GFR) and albuminuria.
  • Explain the impact of race on eGFR calculation.
  • Discuss strategies for management of hypertension and diabetes to slow progression of CKD.

Working in collaboration with the Michigan Allergy and Asthma Society, this course will cover practice gaps in recognizing common drug allergies and developing an effective treatment plan; and address vaccine risk and strategies in developing effective approaches to address vaccine safety concerns. In addition, anaphylaxis, a condition that is often under-recognized will be addressed; diagnosis and management strategies will be identified.

Objectives:

  • Discuss allergy to penicillin, diagnosis, relation to cephalosporin allergy and it’s impact on public health.
  • Discuss available drug allergy testing and its limitations.
  • Recognize the role of desensitization protocols in drug allergy management.
  • Discuss allergy and pseudo allergy to radiocontrast media.
  • Discuss range of hypersensitivity reactions to NSAIDs.
  • Recognize clinical features of severe cutaneous adverse reactions (SCAR) to medications.
  • Discuss the history and benefits of vaccinations.
  • Discuss the known and evidence-based data on vaccine allergies and adverse reactions.
  • Review the roots, origins, and impact of disinformation, misinformation, and vaccine hesitancy on the people of the US and worldwide.
  • Review suggested strategies to minimize vaccine hesitancy and improve public acceptance of vaccinations.
  • Discuss how to recognize and treatment of anaphylaxis.
  • Recognize confirmatory and supplementary laboratory testing.
