Refreshed Open Payments Data Now Available
According to a recent announcement from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), data published via the Open Payments program has been updated to reflect changes that took place since publication in June 2025. The mission of the program is to provide the public with a more transparent health care system. Reporting entities such as drug and medical device companies are required to disclose payments that are made to physicians and other covered recipients (e.g., physician assistants, nurse practitioners, clinical nurse specialists, certified registered nurse anesthetists, anesthesiologist assistants and certified nurse midwives).
The data in this refresh includes updates from disputes and other data corrections made since the initial June 30, 2025, data publication, which encompassed the 2024 Open Payments Program Year. According to the CMS Open Payments Program website, “drug and medical device companies reported 16.15 million records amounting to $13.14 billion in payments or transfers of value to health care providers during 2024.”
Throughout the calendar year, reporting entities collect data, which is then submitted during the first quarter of the following year. Physicians and other covered recipients have a window of opportunity to review data attributed to them and, if necessary, to dispute any incorrect information. The Michigan State Medical Society (MSMS) encourages physicians to routinely check the dataset to ensure the accuracy of any data attributed to them.
