The American Medical Association (AMA) and Vaccine Integrity Project (VIP) announced the release of an independent evidence review to inform respiratory virus immunization recommendations for the 2026-2027 season. These recommendations were developed by:
- American Academy of Pediatrics (<19 years of age)
- American Academy of Family Physicians (≥19 years of age and health care personnel)
- American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (pregnancy)
- Infectious Diseases Society of America (immunocompromised)
This collaborative effort was launched to provide trusted, science-based information for informed vaccine decisions. The AMA-VIP partnership engaged medical specialty societies and public health organizations to 1)identify key policy questions, 2) review emerging evidence to inform immunization recommendations, and 3) communicate findings to clinicians and patients.
On September 2, 2026, Journal of the American Medicine Association (JAMA) published evidence reviews for the three respiratory pathogens: Flu, COVID, and RSV as well as a Perspective piece on the collaboration to help ensure physicians and other health professionals have the latest evidence behind immunization recommendations for their patients. The latest, high-quality scientific evidence found that immunizations against influenza, COVID-19 and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) continue to provide meaningful protection against severe illness, hospitalization, and death. Reassuringly, researchers found no new safety concerns in comparative studies.
A digital resource hub of immunization materials for clinicians and patients to help amplify these recommendations has been created and is available at www.SpreadTheFacts.org.
