Patients, Doctors Provide Testimony in Front of The Michigan House Health Policy Committee
On Thursday, the Michigan House of Representatives Health Policy Committee held their first hearing on Senate Bill 247, a bill to reform prior authorization. Paul Bozyk, MD, (Oakland County) Vice Chair of the MSMS Board of Directors, and Nita Kulkarni, MD, (Genesee County) member of the MSMS Board of Directors and Chair of the Committee State Legislation and Regulations, testified before the committee. Their remarks focused on the delays in patient care the current prior authorization process causes due to administrative burdens. In their testimony, they also shared personal stories about their experiences, and their patients’ experiences, in dealing with the burdens of prior authorization.
The response from the committee was overwhelmingly positive and several partners of the Health Can’t Wait coalition supported the bill. While conversations are still ongoing, we anticipate the bill moving to the House floor for a vote as soon as next week, putting MSMS and the Health Can’t Wait coalition one step closer to accomplishing meaningful prior authorization reform.
