New Committees – Engage in MSMS!

In coordination with the reorganization changes and based on member requests for further engagement, MSMS has strategically reviewed and updated its regular Committees structure.  Find multiple opportunities to discuss timely issues with colleagues and create policy throughout the year.   Meetings are held virtually and often after business hours.  To sign up, email rblake@msms.org. 

Committee on State Legislation and Regulations

This Committee enhances physician participation in the state legislative process.  Members review proposed legislation related to health care and recommend appropriate action in accordance with MSMS policy to the MSMS Board of Directors, as well as providing recommendations when existing policy does not exist.  Meetings are held approximately five times a year.

Committee on Science and Public Health

This Committee monitors issues impacting the quality of patient care, promoting medical progress, and enhancing the health of the public.  It also advises the MSMS Board of Directors on professional and public information activities in the fields of scientific medicine and public health, and assists in informing policy positions on related issues, including but not limited to environmental and public health, artificial intelligence, health equity, and communicable diseases.  Meetings are held three to four times a year.

Medical Care Delivery Committee

This Committee oversees issues that influence the practice of medicine. It provides recommendations to the MSMS Board of Directors related to factors impacting the delivery and quality of medical care such as socioeconomic factors, artificial intelligence, value-based reimbursement, quality measures, etc. Meetings are held three to four times a year.

Continuing Medical Education Committee

This Committee oversees the MSMS Continuing Medical Education Recognition program from the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education.  MSMS recognizes hospitals, health care organizations, and medical associations to administer their own CME activities.  Knowledge of national CME standards and state CME regulations is encouraged.  Meetings are held three to four times a year.

Bioethics Conference Committee

This Committee considers ethical issues related to medical practice, education, research, and public policy.  It also provides input on the education programming of the annual Bioethics Conference.  Meetings are held once a year plus the conference.

MSMS Physician Organization (PO) Council

The MSMS Physician Organization (PO) Council serves as a forum for physician organizations across Michigan to collaborate on issues affecting physician practices, patient care, and healthcare delivery. The council provides opportunities for physician organization leaders to share best practices, discuss payer and regulatory developments, and identify emerging challenges impacting physicians and their patients. Through regular dialogue and collaboration, the PO Council helps inform MSMS advocacy efforts and supports initiatives that strengthen physician practices and improve healthcare across the state.

Policy Committee (with Policy Manual Committee)

The Policy Committee is the official policy-making body of MSMS.  Resolutions are submitted by members to determine medical policies, priorities and direction for the future.  The Committee reviews the resolutions and develops recommendations to be voted on by membership.  Meetings are held 4 times a year.  The application process will begin in December.

Board of Directors

The MSMS Board of Directors provides guidance on the organization’s strategic direction and business operations of MSMS.  These positions are elected by membership through an application and nomination process.  Meetings are held four times a year.  The next application process will begin in December.

Foundation Board of Directors

The MSMS Foundation is a nonprofit charitable organization.  The Board of Directors provides funding for projects that are meaningful to the medical profession including developing future physicians, physician leadership and the practice of medicine.  Meetings are held two times a year.

Physicians Review Organization Board of Directors

Physicians Review Organization is an accredited independent medical review organization.  Some experience with peer and/or medical records review are required.  Meetings are held three times a year.

Michigan Doctors Political Action Committee Board of Directors 

The Michigan Doctors’ Political Action Committee (MDPAC) is the political arm of the Michigan State Medical Society. It is a bipartisan political action committee made up of physicians, their families, residents, students and others interested in making a positive contribution to the medical profession through the political process. MDPAC supports pro-medicine candidates running for the State legislature, Michigan Supreme Court and other statewide positions.
