MSMS task force reorganization FAQs with Doctor Tom George

MSMS continues to face significant structural, financial, and membership challenges that threaten its long-term viability.  MSMS has experienced 25 years of declining membership dues revenue, 16 years of declining active members, and 25 years of declining staff levels.  Current MSMS membership is only 3,900 physicians.

At its current trajectory, MSMS will have only 1,000 members and 3 staff in 4 to 5 years.

The MSMS Reorganization Task Force, appointed by the Board of Directors following resolutions adopted by the 2025 House of Delegates, was charged with developing recommendations to modernize governance, improve efficiency, and strengthen engagement across the organization.

After extensive review and deliberation, the Task Force and Board of Directors recommend a “series of comprehensive structural changes designed to position MSMS for the next decade of success.  They strongly believe these changes are needed for MSMS to continue its current levels of advocacy, services, and activities for physicians.

These recommendations will enhance efficiency and strengthen engagement across the organization. The recommendations are data and research driven.  These changes have worked in other states and would ensure long-term viability for MSMS..

As these recommendations require Bylaws changes, they will be submitted to the House on April 18, 2026, for decision. They include:

  • Eliminating mandatory dual membership and chartering of county medical societies
  • Replacing the House of Delegates with an all-member, year-round policy forum
  • Reducing the size of the MSMS Board of Directors from 36 to 13 members, focusing on skill-based rather than representational governance
  • Eliminating the Judicial Commission and requirement that county medical societies maintain a peer review and ethics committee

MSMS physician leadership asks delegates to consider the difficult decisions that need to be made to assure there is an MSMS for future physicians.
