MSMS STATEMENT: Enough is Enough
The following is a public statement from Pino Colone, MD, president of the Michigan State Medical Society, in response to this week’s horrific shooting at Oxford High School that resulted in the death of four students.
“As details continue to emerge about the tragic shooting at Oxford High School, it is plainly clear that while our condolences are sincere and well-meaning, they are not enough. Together, we must find solutions to put a stop to the senseless public health risk of gun violence before more lives are lost. If you own firearms, please make sure you keep them safe so we can keep our children safe”
“We as physicians work in our own individual areas of practice to identify mental health issues and other concerns that could lead to tragedy, and we strongly support federal and state efforts to ensure that physicians can fulfill that role in preventing firearm injuries by health screening, patient counseling on gun safety, and referral to mental health services for those with behavioral and emotional medical conditions.
“We need to deploy a complete array of cultural, social, medical, legal, and educational tools and assets. We need to do it together.”
