MSMS Shines a Light on the Experiences of Frontline Physicians Battling COVID-19

The Michigan State Medical Society (MSMS) today launched a new statewide public service announcement campaign urging the public to continue practicing good social distancing, mask wearing and handwashing habits in the ongoing effort to slow the spread of COVID-19. The campaign highlights video messages from Michigan physicians working on the frontlines in the fight against the pandemic.

“With vaccines for COVID-19 slowly rolling out across the state, it’s critical that we all continue to remain vigilant in our efforts to slow the spread of this disease,” said S. Bobby Mukkamala, MD, president of MSMS. “We are by no means out of the woods, and I want to ask people to do the right thing.”

Physicians across the state have been engaged in the fight against COVID-19 for over 10 months. The effort has severely strained multiple facets of the health care system, including hospitals, ICU beds, and the frontline health care workers themselves.

“The biggest resource that we need right now is workforce, and a workforce that isn’t incredibly fatigued by doing this for the past 10 months,” said Paul Bozyk, MD, in one of the shared videos. “It’s devastating if a health care worker gets COVID, not only for that individual, but that’s one less person we have that can try to help in the fight to save as many COVID patients as we can.”

The video public service announcements will be running on digital platforms statewide and feature frontline physicians from metro Detroit, Flint, Grand Rapids, Ann Arbor and Saginaw. Physicians hope that sharing their frontline experience will inspire others to continue to do their part in the effort slow the spread of COVID-19.

“This has been going on for so long, and we’ve been trying so hard for so long, but we will get better” said Diana Nordlund, DO, JD, in a video. “We just have to take it one day at a time and remember that those little steps that we take to protect each other really do matter.”
