The Michigan State Medical Society (MSMS) recently welcomed physician organization leaders for an in-person meeting focused on the policy, regulatory, and operational issues shaping health care in Michigan. The gathering provided an opportunity for attendees to hear directly from state and federal leaders, learn about resources available to physician organizations and practices, and connect with colleagues from across the state.
State and federal health policy were key areas of discussion. Josiah Kissling, Senior Advisor in Michigan House Speaker Matt Hall’s Office, shared insight into current activity in the Michigan Legislature and issues affecting physicians and the broader health care environment. We welcomed representatives from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), Tanya Pagan Raggio-Ashley, MD, Regional Chief Medical Officer for the Center for Clinical Standards and Quality for Regions 1 and 2, and Brenda Delgado, External Affairs, who provided updates on federal priorities and developments impacting physicians, practices, and patients. They welcomed feedback on the proposed 2027 CMS Physician Fee Schedule, looked for input on programs, and initiatives, and any immediate issues that physicians are facing in daily practice.
MSMS provided a broader organizational and advocacy update focused on several issues with direct implications for physician organizations and practices. The discussion included key provisions of the 2027 CMS proposed Medicare Physician Fee Schedule and what the proposed changes could mean for physician payment and practice operations. MSMS also shared updates on ongoing payer initiatives, including its work with health plans to address reimbursement, administrative burden, billing and payment policies, and other challenges affecting physician practices. The conversation highlighted how MSMS is engaging with payers and policymakers on behalf of physicians while continuing to identify opportunities for physician organizations to provide input and help shape advocacy efforts.
The meeting also highlighted resources designed to support physician organizations and their practices. Affiliated Enterprise Solutions shared information about the MSMS Supply Chain/General Purchasing Order and opportunities to help practices with purchasing needs and operational efficiencies. Global Clinical Services discussed additional services and resources available to support physician practices.
Beyond the formal presentations, the in-person gathering offered an important opportunity for physician organization leaders to exchange perspectives, discuss shared challenges, and strengthen connections with MSMS and one another. These conversations help MSMS better understand what physician organizations and their practices are experiencing and ensure that their perspectives continue to inform the Society’s advocacy, programs, and services.
