MSMS Member Benefit Spotlight - Legal Services

The Michigan State Medical Society (MSMS) offers aggressive pursuit of physician rights in every forum as well as personal access to a multitude of legal resources. One of our biggest values to members is the ability to offer health law information and tools on-demand through our compendium of legal alerts, articles, guides, and checklists pertaining to the practice of medicine and related regulatory requirements.

As a legal resource, MSMS also:

  • Advocates for physicians at the state and federal legislative level
  • Provides legal expertise in support of MSMS's regulatory and legislative advocacy
  • Participates in amicus briefs in legal cases that impact the practice of medicine generally and thereby, have the potential to significantly impact Michigan physicians and patients from a legal and/or public policy perspective
  • Represents physicians on various boards and committees
  • Provides information about laws and regulations that impact physicians and the practice of medicine
  • Offers compliance guidance and legal consultation
  • Offers discounted legal review and consultation services provided by MSMS Legal Counsel for employment contracts, medical staff bylaws, and  physician audits.

MSMS members can access MSMS Legal Counsel by contacting the MSMS Health Care Delivery Department at (517) 336-5766. General legal questions on a variety of issues of concern to physicians statewide (e.g., medical record retention, medical records charges, privacy issues, surprise billing, Stark, etc.) are answered for FREE as a benefit of MSMS membership. Please note, if the scope of the inquiry requires more than general legal assistance/clarification or if individual representation is needed, MSMS Legal Counsel and the MSMS member would discuss options, including charges, before proceeding.

For more information on the legal services that MSMS has to offer please contact Stacey Hetitiger at shettiger@msms.org or at (517) 336-5766.
