The Michigan State Medical Society (MSMS) has joined a broad coalition of health care providers, public health agencies, community organizations, and family advocates in launching Michigan for Vaccines, a new statewide initiative dedicated to protecting and strengthening vaccine policy across Michigan.
The coalition was formed in response to growing concerns about declining vaccination rates, increasing vaccine misinformation, and emerging threats to vaccine access. Through coordinated education and advocacy efforts, Michigan for Vaccines aims to advance evidence-based policies that support immunization and protect the health of Michigan communities.
A recent statewide poll conducted by EPIC-MRA underscores the public's concern about vaccine-preventable diseases. According to the survey, 62 percent of Michiganders are concerned about the return of illnesses such as measles, whooping cough, and influenza, with nearly four in ten respondents reporting they are very concerned. The poll also found that 59 percent of Michigan voters would be less likely to support a political candidate who seeks to weaken vaccine access or school immunization requirements, compared to only 11 percent who would be more likely to support such efforts.
Vaccines remain one of the safest and most effective public health interventions available, preventing serious illness, hospitalization, and death. Michigan for Vaccines will work to ensure policymakers, community leaders, and the public have access to accurate, science-based information about immunizations and the importance of maintaining strong protections for children, families, and vulnerable populations.
As the coalition expands, Michigan for Vaccines is establishing a Speaker's Bureau to help amplify its mission and policy priorities. The Speaker's Bureau will consist of trusted physicians, public health professionals, community leaders, parents, and other advocates who are willing to participate in media interviews, press conferences, public events, community presentations, and other outreach opportunities. MSMS is seeking physician volunteers who are interested in serving as spokespersons and advocates for vaccine confidence and access. Those selected will help ensure that evidence-based perspectives remain at the forefront of public conversations about immunization policy in Michigan.
