MSMS Answers Your Medical Records Questions

The Michigan State Medical Society (MSMS) offers a variety of legal alerts and guides to help physicians and their practices understand the latest rules and regulations impacting the practice of medicine. One of the most popular resources is the MSMS Medical Records Guide for Physician Practices.

Prepared by MSMS Legal Counsel, Kerr, Russell and Weber, PLC, the Guide is a comprehensive overview of federal and state laws and regulations that apply to medical records. Topics covered include, but are not limited to, ownership, management, access, retention, disposition, and copying fees. Many of the questions addressed were initiated by inquiries from MSMS members. In addition to the MSMS Medical Records Guide for Physician Practices, you may want to review a copy of Michigan’s 2025 Medical Records Access Act (MRAA) Fees. The MRAA requires the state to adjust the caps on copying fees annually.

MSMS will also be hosting a live Grand Rounds webinar, Medical Record Regulations and Practices, on January 14, 2026. This session will review federal and state laws and basic principles related to medical records management.  Participants will gain a better understanding of the legal and ethical obligations to ensure compliance.
