President Donald Trump signed an executive order August 10, 2026, establishing new federal childhood vaccine recommendations. The order divides vaccines into three categories: those recommended for all children, those recommended for certain high-risk populations and those administered through shared clinical decision-making. It also calls for the combined measles, mumps and rubella vaccine to be replaced with three separate shots once individual products become available domestically and recommends administering childhood vaccines at separate visits when feasible. For Michigan families and physicians, however, the key message is that the state’s vaccine recommendations have not changed.
Michigan Chief Medical Executive Natasha Bagdasarian, MD, has issued a standing recommendation directing clinicians and families to follow the child and adolescent immunization schedules developed by the American Academy of Pediatrics or the American Academy of Family Physicians. Vaccines removed from the routine federal schedule - including rotavirus, meningococcal, hepatitis A and B, influenza, COVID-19 and RSV - continue to be recommended for all children by Michigan health officials and leading national medical organizations.
Michigan’s immunization recommendations also direct providers to the AAFP Adult Immunization Schedule and the ACOG Maternal Immunization Schedule.
“These schedules remain the trusted, science-based standard for protecting children against vaccine-preventable diseases, and Michigan’s physicians, nurses, pharmacists, health systems, health plans and local health departments are united behind them. Families with questions should talk with their pediatrician or family physician, who remains the most reliable source of guidance about their child’s health.”
As federal vaccine policy continues to evolve, Michigan physicians should continue following the state’s standing recommendation and established evidence-based immunization schedules. MSMS will continue monitoring federal and state developments and sharing updates as additional guidance becomes available.
