Members have asked about the status of the Michigan Medicine and Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Michigan (BCBSM) negotiations, given the potential impact on physicians’ ability to refer their patients to Michigan Medicine. Right now, Michigan Medicine continues to see all BCBSM members and they encourage physicians to feel comfortable referring patients as usual.
As has been widely reported in the media, Michigan Medicine is facing substantial cuts in reimbursement from the insurer, and is asking BCBSM to extend its current contract, with any additional reimbursement based on meeting specific quality and performance metrics. MSMS is hopeful the two parties will reach an agreement that protects clinicians’ autonomy to make treatment decisions based on their medical judgement and each patient’s needs.
