MDHHS Names Eden V. Wells, MD, MPH as Michigan's New Chief Medical Executive
"MDHHS is pleased to welcome Doctor Wells to the new department as Chief Medical Executive," said Nick Lyon, director of the MDHHS. "I am confident her expertise and previous experience with the former Michigan Department of Community Health (MDCH) will prove to be invaluable as we work to continually improve the health and overall wellbeing of Michigan residents."
Doctor Wells was previously with the Bureau of Epidemiology at MDCH, serving as a medical consultant to the Bureau and as a medical epidemiologist. During her former time with the department, her activities included investigation of and response to public health incidents and outbreaks, and preparedness planning for potential bioterrorism and pandemic influenza events.
Doctor Wells concurrently serves as Clinical Associate Professor, Epidemiology, and the Director for the Preventive Medicine Residency at the University of Michigan, School of Public Health in Ann Arbor. Her activities involve curriculum development, teaching, and applied public health practice training within the preventive medicine program. In this role, her research and practice activities include work in disaster epidemiology, and development and evaluation of surveillance for emerging infectious disease threats. Dr. Wells teaches graduate-level public health practice, applied epidemiology courses, and clinical preventive medicine.
Previously, Doctor Matthew Davis has served as the MDCH Chief Medical Executive since March of 2013. Doctor Davis will assist Doctor Wells in the transition.
"I have been honored to serve Michiganders, and the public health and health care communities in our state over the last two years," said Doctor Davis. He will be returning to his faculty role at the University of Michigan with special responsibilities for health policy-related research and policy-focused education.
Doctor Wells completed medical school at the Ohio State University College of Medicine, internal medicine training at Vanderbilt University Hospitals, and a preventive medicine residency at the University of Michigan, School of Public Health. She is board-certified in both Internal Medicine and Preventive Medicine. In 2013, she was named a Fellow of the American College of Preventive Medicine.
