On Wednesday, August 12, 2026, the Michigan State Medical Society (MSMS) will host two live webinars designed to enhance both your clinical knowledge and operational efficiency.
Sleep Medicine - What is Hypersomnia (.75 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™)*
While many people struggle to get enough sleep, individuals with hypersomnia face a different challenge: an inability to stay awake despite getting "plenty" of rest. Join Punithavathy Vijayakumar, MD, Clinical Assistant Professor, Neurology and Sleep Medicine, University of Michigan Medical School, from 12:00 – 12:45 pm, as she dives into the clinical nuances of excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) and explores why more sleep is not always the solution.
Key Highlights:
- Defining the "Sleep Drunkenness": Understanding the difference between general fatigue and true clinical hypersomnia.
- Primary vs. Secondary Hypersomnia: Distinguishing between central disorders (like Narcolepsy and Idiopathic Hypersomnia) and sleepiness caused by medications, mood disorders, or other medical conditions.
- The Diagnostic Journey: A look at the tools sleep specialists use, including the Epworth Sleepiness Scale, Polysomnography (PSG), and the Multiple Sleep Latency Test (MSLT).
- Impact and Management: How chronic sleepiness influences cardiovascular risk, cognitive function and safety, along with current pharmacological and behavioral treatment strategies.

A–Z of Value‑Based Care - Building a Shared Clinical and Operational Vocabulary for Modern Healthcare (1 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™)**
Clinicians are increasingly expected to participate in value‑based care (VBC), yet many of the foundational terms remain misunderstood. Learning simple, shared definitions for key concepts, like quality measures, population health, and care pathway, helps everyone communicate clearly and align around the same goals.
When clinical teams speak the same language, it bridges the gap between current practice and ideal performance. This webinar will show you how a unified vocabulary simplifies data analysis, improves patient outcomes, reduces waste, and boosts confidence across all teams. From 1:00 – 2:00 pm, join Gaurav Sharma, MD, Vice Chair, Clinical Pathology, Henry Ford Health System, and Ernest Cawvey, Regional Director, Clinical Transformation, Henry Ford Health System, as they break down this essential healthcare vocabulary.
