The Michigan State Medical Society (MSMS) wishes all members and their families a safe, relaxing, and enjoyable Independence Day.
We extend a special thank you to the physicians who will be working or on call throughout the holiday weekend. Your dedication to caring for Michigan's patients does not go unnoticed.
For those celebrating, the Fourth of July weekend in Michigan means long days soaking up the sun, full grills, fireworks over the water, and quality time with friends and family. Physicians know that a little prevention goes a long way so here are a few reminders worth keeping in mind and passing along to others headed into the holiday weekend.
- Hydrate before you feel thirsty. In hot weather, thirst is often a sign you're already becoming dehydrated. Drink water throughout the day, especially if you're spending time outdoors or drinking alcohol. (U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention)
- Sunscreen is a must. Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher and reapply every two hours, or sooner after swimming or sweating. (American Academy of Dermatology)
- Recognize the signs of heat illness. Heavy sweating, dizziness, nausea, headache, or muscle cramps can all signal heat exhaustion. Move to a cool place, drink water, and seek medical attention if symptoms worsen. (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention)
- Leave fireworks to the professionals. Fireworks send thousands of people to emergency departments every year. Skip the trip to the ER and enjoy one of Michigan's many public fireworks displays instead. (U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission)
- Give your grill some space. Keep grills at least 10 feet from your home, deck railings, and overhanging branches, and never leave a lit grill unattended. (National Fire Protection Association)
