Driving Change: Recent Grants from the MSMS Foundation

The Michigan State Medical Society (MSMS) Foundation serves as the nonprofit charitable organization of MSMS and is dedicated to advancing the field of health for the public good. The Foundation guides philanthropic efforts to strengthen the medical community and public welfare across Michigan.

Defining Our Mission

The Foundation is committed to a clear and vital mission, focusing on key areas that support both the public and the medical profession:

  • Education and Research: Supporting professional and public health education, research programs, and health-focused projects.

  • Health Promotion: Encouraging the advancement of healthy lifestyles and the prevention, diagnosis, or cure of disease.

  • Physician Support: Providing critical support for physicians who may suffer from impairment.

  • Resource Management: Acting as a reliable resource for the administration and distribution of signature funds or bequests designated for special purposes.

Philanthropy is focused on projects meaningful to the medical profession, including developing future physicians, fostering physician leadership, and supporting the practice of medicine. Community-based projects emphasize essential collaboration between physicians and community leaders.

Mission in Action: Recent Grant Awards

The MSMS Foundation is proud to support diverse and impactful initiatives that directly align with its mission. Recent grant recipients showcase the scope of this commitment:

  • Calvin University (HEALTH Camp): This weeklong summer experience is designed for boys (ages 12–17) and girls (ages 9–15) from low-income and racially diverse backgrounds in Grand Rapids. The camp promotes physical, mental, and social well-being while introducing participants to basic health concepts and potential careers in the health professions.

  • Henry Ford Health (RYSE MED Program): The Readying Youth Scientists for Excellence in Medicine, Health Equity, and Discovery (RYSE MED) Program prepares high school, undergraduate, gap year, graduate, and medical students in the metro Detroit area to pursue careers in medicine and research, focusing on preparing diverse talent for the future workforce.

  • Charter Township of Oxford: Support for creating a historical marker that tells the inspiring story of Aileen Corbit, MD (1877-1937). Doctor Corbit was Oxford’s first female physician and one of only three women to earn a Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Michigan in 1902, highlighting the history of women in medicine.

  • Love in Action Free Health Center: This grant will help replace and expand critical diagnostic equipment for on-site cardiac and lipid testing. The Health Center connects volunteer medical and dental professionals with uninsured and underinsured adults who lack access to essential care, helping patients manage their health and move toward obtaining insurance.
