Comment on Board of Midwifery Rules

In late 2017, the Michigan Legislature passed a law requiring the licensing of midwives, also known as certified professional midwives (distinct from specialized advanced practice certified nurse-midwives).  The statute laid out basic parameters for the profession and required the Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA) to promulgate rules by April 24, 2018.  The draft rules are currently out for public comment.

MSMS has partnered with the Michigan Section of ACOG, Michigan Council for Maternal and Child Health, Michigan Council of Nurse Practitioners, American Nurses Association Michigan, Michigan Affiliate of the American College of Nurse-Midwives, and Michigan Health & Hospital Association to share our mutual concerns that the proposed regulations will not adequately protect the health and safety of mothers and babies.  Based on our collective review, we have created a formal comment letter that will be submitted to LARA and the Midwifery Board to encourage changes to the rules before they are forwarded in the process.

If you, as an individual or as an organization (please ensure you are authorized to sign on behalf of your organization), would like to add your signature to this letter, please click here and complete the short form.  This opportunity will remain open until noon on Monday, October 29, 2018.

For those wishing to make their own comments, LARA will be accepting comments until 5:00 p.m. on October 30, 2018, via e-mail, in-person at the public hearing on October 30, 2018 at 9 a.m. at the G. Mennen Williams Building Auditorium, 525 W. Ottawa Street in Lansing, or mail at:
