From Clinic to Capitol: Reflections from an MSMS Policy Fellow

Grant, Student fellow with legislator

My name is Grant Raymor. I am an M4 MD-MBA student at Covenant HealthCare College of Medicine at Central Michigan University and just completed my healthcare policy elective as a Michigan State Medical Society (MSMS) policy fellow during my final block of medical school. I became interested in this elective after learning about it in my second year of medical school. Prior to medical school, I worked as a medical assistant where I saw firsthand the administrative burden of billing and insurance. This experience motivated my interest in improving fairness and reimbursement processes and reducing physician administrative workload.

During my time at MSMS, I had the opportunity to participate in policy discussions with the MSMS staff and research legislative language related to downcoding, timely payments, and AI guardrails in healthcare. I was also given the opportunity to contribute my perspective and learn more about current policy initiatives, including scope-of-practice issues, CME requirement reallocations, mental health disclosure in physician licensure, and the licensing of anesthesiologist assistants, which brought me to the capital on multiple occasions. Currently, I am looking forward to matching into psychiatry later this month. In the future, I aim to remain in Michigan and continue to be involved in healthcare policy, specifically by increasing integrative psychiatry, with a focus on nutrition and fitness as part of the comprehensive treatment plan. I appreciate the opportunity to learn from MSMS and contribute during this final month of medical school.

MSMS thanks Grant for his contributions to our advocacy work. We wish him the very best in residency.
