Award Ceremony to Honor Outstanding Local Physician

The Kent County Medical Society is currently accepting nominations for its inaugural Physician Citizenship Award which will be presented during a reception beginning at 6 p.m. on November 13 at the Vander Mill Cider Tap Room. The award is in partnership with KCMS, the Kent County Osteopathic Association, the Ottawa County Medical Society, and the Boy Scouts of America President Ford Field Service Council.

While planning discussions for the event were taking place, Patricia Dalton, KCMS/KCOA Executive Director, said she "had an opportunity to learn about the deep level of involvement many area physicians had in Scouting."

"I have one board member who is an Eagle Scout, as are his sons, and his business partner and I just thought that was very interesting,”" Dalton said. "He told me that ‘once an Eagle Scout, always an Eagle Scout.’"

That board member is Doctor John Fox, a long-time volunteer leader with the Boy Scouts and president of the President Ford FSC.

The leadership and life skills taught in Scouting have served these physicians well and Dalton said these are important for young people as well.

"These are important lessons in life to work towards a goal," Dalton said. "Honest attributes are even more critical in younger people. There are distractions out there that can create false leadership."

Aaron Gach, Scout Executive/CEO with the President Ford FSC, said "the award is a unique opportunity to strengthen the bonds between the medical community and Scouting."

"These physicians are tremendous examples to our youth of what is possible when you have access to an authentic Scouting experience," Gach said. "We are grateful for this partnership and look forward to continuing this relationship."

Nominations will be accepted until the end of October. Applications are available at: https://www.cognitoforms.com/MichiganCrossroadCouncil/PhysicianCitizenshipAwardNomination.
