The Annual Rudi Ansbacher, MD, Resident and Fellow; and Student Abstract Research Poster Symposium

Doctor Ansbacher graduated from Culver Military Academy. He received his BA degree from Virginia Military Institute; his MD degree from the University of Virginia School of Medicine; and his MS from the University of Michigan. He completed an internship at the University of Virginia Hospital and residencies at Womack Army Hospital in Fort Bragg, North Carolina, and at Letterman General Hospital in San Francisco, California.

After his training, he became a Professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Michigan Medical Center, and served as Assistant Chairman of the department, Acting Chairman, and interim Chairman

In honor of his memory and commitment to medical education, the Annual Rudi Ansbacher, MD, Resident and Fellow; and Student Research Poster Symposium will be held on Wednesday, October 24, through Thursday, October 25, 2018, at the Sheraton in Novi. Awards will be presented during the Friday, October 26, 2018, luncheon, to the top two recipients for both residents and fellows; and students.

General Guidelines

  1. Deadline for submissions is: August 31, 2018.
  2. Students will be judged separately from Residents and Fellows.
  3. Only one submission allowed per individual.
  4. All submissions must be via email: mbenhamza@msms.org. Do not hesitate to email or call 517-336-7581 with questions.
  5. All work must be of the individuals actively engaged in residency, fellowship training, or medical student training.

Poster Symposium

  1. Poster Symposium Abstract Categories
      
    1. Submissions may be entered into the following category: Clinical Medicine and Vignettes
       
      1. "Clinical Medicine" connotes use of scientific method to derive original data in the patient care setting. Abstracts should identify pertinent aspects of pathophysiology, clinical relevance, and techniques used to derive the data.
         
      2. "Clinical Vignettes" involve the presentation of one or more patient encounters that illuminate unique observations of a known disease, or that describe a novel disease process. These are expected to include clinical patient information -- such as history, physical exam, clinical data -- as well as an analysis of how such observations might contribute to existing medical or scientific knowledge.
         
  2. Poster Symposium Rules for Abstract Submission
     
    1. Open to all students and residents and fellows.
       
    2. All abstract submissions should be submitted as an email attachment in MS WORD. The submissions must begin with:
       
      1. Title 
      2. Authors names 
      3. Institution Affiliations
         
    3. All abstracts should consist of four paragraphs, with the headings: Background (the hypothesis of the study must be clearly stated), Methods, Results and Conclusions. A fifth paragraph, headed Clinical Relevance, should be added for basic science articles.
       
    4. At the end of the abstract, please include the category of the abstract, contact information of the entrant including name, title (resident/fellow, specialty, year, name of institution), address, cell phone, and e-mail.
       
    5. Submission from previous years are not allowed.
       
  3. Poster Symposium Selection/Onsite Schedule
     
    1. Top abstracts from this category will be selected by a Poster Symposium Committee for presentation at the MSMS Foundation Annual Scientific Meeting in Novi, Michigan on October 24, and 25, 2018.
       
    2. Authors will be contacted via e-mail on September 14, 2018, regarding the Committee's decision on the abstract selection.
       
    3. Invited posters are to be prepared in advance, not greater than 5' (width) x 3' (height). Bulletin board and pins will be provided.
       
    4. Posters should include Title, Authors, Institution Affiliations, and a detailed description of methods and results. Graphs, tables and photos are welcome on posters.
       
    5. No word count is assigned to Poster text, but please limit narrative.
       
    6. Posters will be displayed on bulletin boards in a lobby/exhibitor area where entrants will be present to discuss their submissions
       
      1. Residents and Fellows (16 maximum) -- Wednesday, October 24, 11:30 am to 12:30 pm 
      2. Medical Students (18 maximum) -- Thursday, October 25, 11:30 am to 12:30 pm
        at the MSMS Foundation Annual Scientific Meeting in Novi, Michigan.
         
    7. All costs of poster creation will be the responsibility of the entrants.
       
    8. During a designated display time, a panel of judges will visit and examine each presentation.
       
    9. Entrants are to remove posters at the end of presentation time.
       
  4. Judging and Awards for Poster Symposium
     
    1. The panel of Poster Competition judges will be represented by members of the ASM Planning Committee and selected ASM attendees.
       
    2. Award recipients will be announced at the William Beaumont Lecture on Friday, October 26 at 11:30 am. at the Sheraton in Novi.
       
    3. There will be cash awards for the top two contestants for the student and resident/fellow categories. The awardees, as determined by the panel of judges, will win the following:
       
      1. Cash prizes of $250 and $125 (for 1st and 2nd place student; and 1st and 2nd place residents and fellows) 
      2. Awardee Plaque.
      3. Recognition in MSMS communications.
