Advocacy in Action: Working For Michigan Physicians

Whether it’s advocating on legislation, addressing payment concerns with health plans and insurers, or making sure physicians are represented, the MSMS Advocacy team is working on your behalf. The following are some recent highlights:

  • Connected 31 physicians and medical students with 17 legislators on MSMS Advocacy Day. If you were not able to attend, but would like to join our Director of Government Relations for a day in Lansing, contact Kate Dorsey at kdorsey@msms.org to schedule a date.
  • MSMS has been a convener and leader in the effort to have Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan (BCBSM) rescind its detrimental modifier 25 policy scheduled to take effect on May 1, 2026. If your practice will be adversely impacted, you can share your concerns with BCBSM via our Grassroots Action Center.
  • MSMS President, Amit Ghose, MD, presented testimony in support of House Bill 5313, which would align licensure and CME standards with national norms.  It was favorably reported out of House Health Policy and referred to the House Committee on Rules. He was joined by MSMS Legal Counsel, Kathleen Westfall, and MSMS CEO, Tom George, MD.
  • MSMS maintained a consistent presence at the Capitol, with staff present at ten legislative committee hearings to monitor developments, provide expertise, and advocate for physician and patient priorities across a range of policy issues.
  • MSMS staff met with BCBSM, Michigan Medicaid, Medicare, and Priority Health on timely issues of concern to physicians.
  • Continued representation of physicians on the Medicaid Advisory Committee (MAC), which advises the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services on policy issues related to Medicaid.
