Apply for a Grant from the MSMS Foundation


The MSMS Foundation supports public or professional education, research programs, and projects in the field of health and encourage the advancement of healthy lifestyles and the prevention, diagnosis or cure of disease. The MSMS Foundation assists with activities that support physicians and MSMS. 

Our philanthropic focus will be to support projects and activities that are meaningful to the medical profession including:

  • Initiatives that make the practice of medicine and the healthcare system better
  • Activities that ensure the provision of good patient care
  • Development of future physicians and physician leadership
  • Community-based projects that engage both physicians and community leaders

Grant applications must have an MSMS physician member involved or sponsor the grant activity. 


Recent Grants by MSMS Foundation

Here is a sampling of programs that Michigan State Medical Society Foundation has recently funded. 

  • Southeast Michigan Center for Medical Education - To support the Michigan Summit on Quality Improvement and Patient Safety. The Goal of this sumit is to focus on the initial steps of the QIPS program and to highlight the importance of Residents and Fellows in the quality improvement process. 
  • Wayne State University - for the MI AIM intiative, whose purpose is to better educate physicians on maternal health and to protect and enhance the health of mothers in Michigan. 
  • Tri-County Office on Aging - For their Chronic Pain PATH (Personal Action Toward Health) program. This grant will help fund workshops for pain management education to adults 50 years of age and older in rural communities with priority in Clinton, Eaton, and Ingham counties. 
  • Genesee County Medical Society (Genesee County) - Flint water crisis assistance
  • Center for Healthcare Research and Transformation (CHRT) - CHRT Policy Fellowship, the goals of which are to teach the researchers and policymakers about health policy in Michigan and nationally, to help the researchers translate their resrach into policy, and to provide the policymakers with evidence-based resources. 
  • HAVEN, Inc. - to conduct a community-wide Danger Assessment Training, which will provide education and certification in the use of a validated tool for the assessment of overall danger and potential lethality for victims of domestic violence. 
  • Camp Kesem CIT Implementation - to send 20 counselors-in-training to a week of camp teaching them valuable life skills while offering them the support that Camp Kesem is designed for. 

Grant Application Criteria

Because of the limitation of available grant money, grants may not be provided for many worthy activities and often are supplementary or complementary to other funding separately obtained. The Foundation grants are limited to programs or projects which are: Michigan-based in origin and function, formally established or institutionally based, non-profit, nongovernmental, nonreligious, nonpolitical, nondiscrimintory in composition, orientation, purpose or function with reference to color, race, sex or creed. 

Programs or projects submitted for grants must:

  1. Be non-profit, and be oriented to education, research or service in the field of health, which may encompass physical or mental health, wellness, disease prevention, or healthy lifestyle. The focus of activity may be clinical, sociological, or economic. 
  2. Have significant value directly or indirectly for application to needs within the state of Michigan, affecting the people of Michigan. 
  3. Have a well-defined purpose and specific objectives. 
  4. Be presented with a well-outlined, logical protocol. 
  5. Identify a feasible budget, adequate funding and operational resources, specified and qualified person(s) responsible for operation of the activity and generally demonstrate the ability to complete the proposed program or project. 
  6. Demonstrate the intent and capability for self-evaluation and for periodic reporting of status and accomplishment. 
  7. include at least one MSMS physician member involved in or sponsoring the grant activity.

A. Narrative

Begin with a half-page executive summary. Briefly explain why your agency is requesting this grant, what outcomes you hope to achieve, and how you will spend the funds if the grant is made.

Purpose of Grant

Statement of needs/problems to be addressed
Description of project goals, measurable objectives, action plans, and statements as to whether this is a new or ongoing part of the sponsoring organization.
Timetable for implementation
Description of the qualifications of key staff and volunteers that will ensure the success of the program. List of specific staff training needs for this project.
Long-term strategies for funding this project at end of grant period.

Evaluation

Plans for evaluation, including how success will be defined and measured.
Description of how evaluation results will be used and/or disseminated and, if appropriate, how the project will be replicated.

Budget Narrative/Justification

Grant budget; use the Grant Budget Format that follows.

Organization Information

Brief summary of organizations history, mission, and goals.
Description of current programs, activities, and accomplishments.
Organizational chart, including board, staff and volunteer involvement.
