RESOLVED: That the Michigan State Medical Society in conjunction with the Michigan Medical Group Management Association survey the MSMS membership regarding violence and threats directed toward physicians and health care personnel in the non-hospital work environment and that this information be distributed to the MSMS membership at the Annual House of Delegates meeting in 2012 or 2013 with suggested solutions including advocating for legislative action to help protect patients, health care personnel, and physicians from violent and threatening work environments; and be it further RESOLVED: That the Michigan Delegation to the AMA ask the AMA to direct the AMA Council on Medical Services to survey its membership regarding violence and threats directed toward physicians and health care personnel in the non-hospital work environment and that such a report be ready for the Interim Meeting in 2012 with suggested solutions including advocating for legislative action to help protect patients, health care personnel, and physicians from violent and threatening work environments. RATIONALE: The Committee heard testimony from the resolution author about incidents of physician workplace violence that he has encountered. Committee members discussed incidents that they have encountered and agreed that such a survey could be useful. The resolveds were reordered and the third resolved was incorporated into each of the other resolveds.
