Committee: A (Medical Care Delivery)

Resolved Section(s):
RESOLVED: That MSMS support federal legislation for a single payer system modeled upon Medicare.REFERENCE COMMITTEE RATIONALE: The Committee heard several compelling arguments against a single-payer system. While there are components of the single-payer system that are attractive to physicians such as its perceived simplicity, there are many unresolved questions including 1) how it would be implemented; 2) feasibility; 3) cost; and, 4) questionable government history on the administration of other programs (i.e., lottery, Medicaid managed care, etc.). The Committee noted that other resolutions and industry activities pertaining to uniform coding, billing, and claims processing achieve some the overarching goals of a single-payer system in a more incremental, standardized fashion.
