Year: 2010

Resolution Number: 44

Action Taken: Disapproved

Status:

Author(s): James C. Mitchiner, MD

Sponsor: James C. Mitchiner

On behalf of: Washtenaw County Delegation

Committee: B (Legislation)

Resolved Section(s):
RESOLVED: That MSMS support the adoption of a single-payer health insurance program in the United States; and be it furtherRESOLVED: That MSMS explore opportunities to partner with other like-minded organizations that favor the single-payer approach to providing health insurance to all Americans. RATIONALE: The Committee believed that the author of this resolution offered very valid reasons for discontent with the existing insurance driven model of health care delivery in the United States. However, the Committee was less convinced that a single-payer model offered a more viable or favorable alternative to the existing health care delivery system in the United States. Primarily, the Committee had difficulties believing that a shift to a publicly funded single-payer model would provide physicians with sufficient leverage or recourse if the government were to pursue unfavorable policies.
