Committee: A (Medical Care Delivery)

Resolved Section(s):
RESOLVED: That MSMS support the adoption of a single-payer health insurance program in the United States; and be it furtherRESOLVED: That MSMS explore opportunities to partner with other like-minded organizations that favor the single-payer approach to providing health insurance to all Americans. REFERENCE COMMITTEE RATIONALE: The Committee heard several compelling arguments against a single-payer system. While there are components of the single-payer system that are attractive to physicians such as its perceived simplicity, there are many unresolved questions including 1) how it would be implemented; 2) feasibility; 3) cost; and, 4) questionable government history on the administration of other programs (i.e., lottery, Medicaid managed care, etc.). The Committee noted that other resolutions and industry activities pertaining to uniform coding, billing, and claims processing achieve some the overarching goals of a single-payer system in a more incremental, standardized fashion.
