Resolution Number: 17
Action Taken: Approved as Amended
Status:
Author(s): John D. Roarty, MD
Sponsor: Lawrence R. Handler, MD, MI Ophthalmological Society
On behalf of:
Committee: B (Legislation)
Resolved Section(s):
RESOLVED: That MSMS oppose any efforts by allied health professional boards toindependently determine their scope of practice.RATIONALE: The Committee agreed that it is not the role of the individual health professions to make independent determinations about scope of practice matters. While licensing boards may make decisions in the best interest of patients with respect to disciplinary actions, it is less likely that allied health professions would be able to make objective determinations about their own level of training and therefore should not be able to make determinations about their scope of practice.
