On behalf of: Michigan Association of Medical Examiners

Committee: D (Public Health)

Resolved Section(s):
RESOLVED: That MSMS seek legislation or regulations establishing requirements for fundamental medicolegal death investigation training applicable to all county medical examiners and deputy medical examiners who have not undergone and successfully completed an ACGME approved forensic pathologist program.RATIONALE: This issue was discussed at great length during testimony. Discussion was presented to show examples where policy such as this are already enacted. Illinois currently requires coroners who are not board certified in forensic pathology be required to take 40 hours of training to familiarize themselves with the basics of forensic pathology. There was great discussion about how the program would work, who would be responsible for the education, and how it would be funded. The Committee determined that it was not the responsibility of this Committee to determine the specifics of the program, but to support the principle of this resolution. Therefore the Committee, with amendments, supports the principle of requiring the education for those who have not completed an ACGME approved forensic pathologist program.
