On behalf of: St. Clair County Delegation

Committee: B (Legislation)

Resolved Section(s):
RESOLVED: That the Michigan Delegation to the AMA ask the AMA to work with the Drug Enforcement Agency to change marijuana and its derivatives from a Schedule I to Schedule III category that would be consistent with current medical understanding. RATIONALE: The Committee did not believe that the transition of marijuana from schedule I to schedule II was warranted. Marijuana is not approved by the FDA for use as a treatment and does not have a generally accepted set of guidelines for dosing. Furthermore, there are products derived from marijuana (Marinol) that is FDA approved and can be dosed appropriately. The Committee was not sure what practical impact changing the drug scheduling of Marijuana would have on physicians and patients. Ultimately, the Committee did not believe that marijuana fit the classification of a schedule II drug.
