Committee: A (Medical Care Delivery)

Resolved Section(s):
RESOLVED: That our AMA work with the federal government to reduce the work of hospital pharmacies in labeling and dispensing the sparsely used medications to patients at the time of discharge, to avoid waste and to help patients who are unable to afford costly medications outside the hospital.RATIONALE: The Committee supported the goal of enabling patients to leave the hospital with medications, but not at the risk of patient safety. Committee members believed that patient safety would be compromised with less stringent labeling as proposed by the resolution. The Committee believed that labeling of medication needs to be consistent with labeling requirements for medication dispensed in the outpatient setting.
