Year: 2010
Resolution Number: 65
Action Taken: Approved as Amended
Status:
Author(s): Cheryl C. Farmer, MD
Sponsor: Laura Carravallah, MD
On behalf of: MI Chapter, American College of Physicians
Committee: D (Public Health)
Resolved Section(s):
RESOLVED: That the Michigan Delegation to the AMA ask the AMA to seek legislation that requires physician orders for seasonal vaccine be delivered before delivery to non-medical venues or retail/urgent care clinics. RATIONALE: The Committee appreciated and agreed with the testimony. Vaccine distribution has long been an issue of frustration, especially for small physician practices. While deliberating, the Committee was informed that vaccines are governed at the national level and the resolution would be better aimed toward the AMA. The first resolved asked that physicians receive priority over non-medical venues like retail and urgent care clinics. This resolved was eliminated since the intent of this resolution can be found in existing AMA policy (H-440.896, H-440.877). The second resolved was revised to instruct the AMA to seek federal legislation, which does differ from existing AMA policy, to require physician orders for seasonal vaccine be delivered before non-medical venues.
