Author(s): Theresa M. Cooney, MD, Joshua Stein, MD, and Patrick J. Droste, MD
Sponsor: Theresa M. Cooney, MD
On behalf of: MI Society of Eye Physicians & Surgeons
Committee: B (Legislation)
Resolved Section(s):
RESOLVED: That MSMS pursue legislation that would remove glaucomaas an appropriate indication for medical marijuana usage from the Michigan Medical Marihuana Act.RATIONALE: The Committee received thoughtful and compelling testimony regarding the medical research that reveals there is strong scientific evidence regarding the use of marijuana for treatment of glaucoma. The Committee was somewhat frustrated because the Michigan Medical Marihuana Act specifically references glaucoma as a qualifying condition, and since it was adopted by voter referendum, a very high threshold is required to be met to change the law. A change of this provision will require a two-thirds vote in the House and the Senate as well as a vote of the people or a petition drive and a vote of the people. In spite of this hurdle, the Committee believed that MSMS is correct in incorporating this policy as it is based on sound scientific research which could not be said of the ballot proposal that saw the Michigan Medical Marihuana law enacted.
