RESOLVED: That MSMS formally state its support for initiatives to develop a National Master Patient Identifier, and be it furtherRESOLVED: That MSMS support and initiate the development of a National Patient Identifier by advocating for such a system at the state and national level through the Information Technology Committee; and be it furtherRESOLVED: That the Michigan Delegation to the AMA ask the AMA to formalize the position of organized medicine to support and initiate the creation of a National Master Patient Identifier.REFERENCE COMMITTEE RATIONALE: The Committee acknowledged that while the implementation of a National Master Patient Identifier raises some concerns regarding privacy, current security has improved privacy levels. Therefore, the benefits of this proposal outweigh the risks. Additionally, HIPAA currently mandates the creation of a unique patient identifier.
