Resolved Section(s):
RESOLVED: That MSMS support a policy that health care providers prescribing daily opiates in chronic pain patients monitor those patients at a minimum with a yearly random quantitative urine drug screen.RATIONALE: Existing AMA policy addresses the issue of promoting pain relief and preventing abuse of pain medications. The Committee agreed that this would be considered a mandate and should not be imposed on physicians. The Committee believed that the resolved was too specific, as guidelines are already available.
