RESOLVED: That the Michigan Delegation to the AMA ask that the AMA to lobby Congress to pass legislation that would permit academic and clinical research on “medical marijuana”. RATIONALE: This resolution seeks to provide greater opportunity for medical researchers to study the impact of marijuana use. Legislation that allows patients to possess and use marijuana for medicinal purposes raises questions about when and how physicians can appropriately recommend this substance for their patients. Because there is so little scientifically valid research conducted on this subject, physicians are unable to properly counsel their patients regarding potential risks or potential benefits that could be uncovered by such a study. In any case, the Committee concluded that more information on the long term benefits and risks of marijuana use could be valuable to
