Year: 2012

Resolution Number: 8

Action Taken: Disapproved

Status:

Author(s): Cassandra Klyman, MD

Sponsor: Cassandra Klyman, MD

On behalf of: Oakland County Delegation

Committee: E (Science and Education Affairs)

Resolved Section(s):
RESOLVED: That MSMS should work with the AMA to encourage a delay in Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services requiring mandatory e-prescribing until the technology is advanced enough for all medications to be handled in a single system.RATIONALE: There was little testimony on this resolution. The Committee recognized the value of e prescribing, so it was reluctant to delay its implementation; however, the Committee did acknowledge that there are many specialists who cannot earn the incentives or may have difficulty avoiding penalties under the current guidelines. This is due to the services they provide, how they bill for their services, or the lack of available compliant software for the e-prescribing of controlled substances. The Committee felt that the best way to address this issue, until the guidelines change, is to continue to work with the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) on making the exemption process easier for physicians.
