Committee: D (Public Health)

Resolved Section(s):
RESOLVED: That the Michigan Delegation to AMA ask the AMA to study the lead levels in synthetic turfs and playgrounds nationally and advocate legislation to ban or prevent the use of new synthetic turfs with unacceptable lead levels (greater than 440 parts per million) and old synthetic turfs that are breaking down and subjecting children to potential lead exposure.REFERENCE COMMITTEE RATIONALE: The Committee heard testimony that manufacturers no longer use materials that result in high lead levels in synthetic turf; that there is no clear evidence of impact to human health from exposure to lead-containing turf; and that since 2003 sports fields have used a turf that does not pose this hazard.
