RATIONALE: The Committee determined that there were several logistical issues that supported a decision of no action. First of all, the issue of how to address an alert to others to not disturb someone in the process of dispensing medicines would likely be a decision made at the hospital or other inpatient facility level. Secondly, there are often situations in which the suggested protocol might not be practical such as emergent situations. Thirdly, the evidence as to which approach is most effective is variable at this point. Finally, the Committee recognized that the Michigan Health and Hospital Association Keystone Center is actively addressing various quality and safety issues in inpatient settings. The Committee recommends that MSMS representatives suggest to the Keystone Center that the issue of inpatient safety while dispensing medication be considered. MSMS has representation on the Keystone Center Board.
