RESOLVED: That our AMA support and advocate for legislation in the United States to enhance access to mental health care and pay greater attention to the diagnosis and management of mental illness and concurrent substance abuse disorders, to prevent potential serious violent behavior by using mental health assessment tools to evaluate violent behavior and reporting of at risk psychiatric patients to the law enforcement authority without repercussion of violating patient confidentiality, and to engage actively in our national debate on gun control.
