RESOLVED: That MSMS amend its bylaws to create a Physician Organization Section made up of MSMS members representing the various physician organizations/independent practice associations in Michigan with the Section eligible for one delegate and one alternate delegate to the MSMS House of Delegates; and be it further RESOLVED: That if MSMS amends its bylaws to create a Physician Organization Section, the criteria for an established physician organization/independent practice association (PO/IPA) to send an MSMS member representative to the Section will be that 50 percent or more of the PO/IPA members must be members of MSMS.RATIONALE: This Bylaws change necessitates a change to Section 20.00 of the MSMS Bylaws. Deletions are indicated by strikethroughs, additions are indicated in bold type:20.00 SPECIALTY AND ETHNIC MEDICAL SOCIETIES20.80 PHYSICIAN ORGANIZATION/INDEPENDENT PRACTICE ASSOCIATION (PO/IPA) SECTION—To provide representation of physician organizations/independent practice associations in Michigan to discuss, plan, and pursue policy relevant to these organizations. To be eligible for membership in this Section, a PO/IPA must either have 50 MSMS members or 50 percent of its membership must consist of MSMS members.This Section shall elect one delegate and one alternate delegate to the MSMS House of Delegates.The Reference Committee recommends approval of this amendment to the MSMS Bylaws on first reading. If approved, this amendment will be brought back to the 2012 House of Delegates for second and final reading. The 2010 House of Delegates approved on first reading the following changes to the MSMS Bylaws. Deletions are indicated by strikethroughs, additions are indicated in bold type:Bylaws2.30 ACTIVE MEMBERS—To be eligible for active membership in any component society, doctors of medicine must hold an unrevoked, permanent license that is not currently under suspension in Michigan, or if unlicensed, must be engaged in academic teaching, research or administration. To maintain active membership in any component society, doctors of medicine must maintain active membership in this Society and comply with all the provisions of the Bylaws of this Society and the component society.2.31 Suspended Member – If an Active Member’s license is suspended, his/her component society may change his/her membership classification to “Suspended Member.” Those in the Suspended Member classification shall be so recognized by this Society, will not be responsible for dues payments, nor be eligible for holding any office or serve on any committee. The component society shall reinstate anyone in the Suspended Member classification immediately upon notice of reinstatement of his/her license. The Society shall recognize such a reinstatement upon notice from a component society and the member shall again be obligated to pay dues, eligible to hold office and serve on committees.The reference Committee recommends adoption of these amendments to the MSMS Bylaws on second and final reading
