Year: 2011

Resolution Number: 89

Action Taken: Approved as Amended

Status:

Author(s): Mark Rummel, MD

Sponsor: Mark Rummel, MD

On behalf of: Kalamazoo County Delegation

Committee: Rules and Order of Business

Resolved Section(s):
The Committee amended the resolved portion to read:RESOLVED: That the MSMS delegation to the AMA ask the AMA to investigate the misuse of the term “Board Certified.”RATIONALE: The changes to the resolution reflect changes made at the request of the author to better reflect the intent. The Committee acknowledges that the author has highlighted a struggle within medicine of physicians that may practice beyond their residency and fellowship training, yet claim to be “board certified.” However, ABMS and AOA approved specialties may not include all of the board certifications that most physicians would consider to sufficiently rigorous to identify a higher standard of training. This dilemma raises the question that if a Board Certification is not meaningful, then why are physicians required to endure the time and expense. The Committee appreciates the wording of this amended resolution as it provides the AMA with sufficient latitude to come to a conclusion for a complex problem.
