On behalf of: Wayne County Delegation

Committee: C (Internal Affairs and Public Service) [Pre-2014]

Resolved Section(s):
RESOLVED: That the Michigan Delegation to the AMA ask the AMA to develop a membership program that offers participation in the AMA from entry into medical school through retirement from medical practice; and be it furtherRESOLVED: That the Michigan Delegation to the AMA ask the AMA to consider aligning benefits of membership with the amount of dues paid in varying times of a physician’s career including medical school and residency; and be it furtherRESOLVED: That the Michigan Delegation to the AMA ask the AMA to extend membership in the AMA to every medical student in the United States upon medical school admittance without payment of any dues.RATIONALE: The Committee heard testimony from both practicing physicians and medical students and recommended disapproval of this resolution for the following reasons: That AMA life membership has already been attempted and was proved to be fiscally unsound; that the value of membership in any type of organization is greatly diminished when there is no charge for it; and the AMA is already involved in developing creative programs to increase membership.
